Senior Broadcast Engineer

Summary CapRadio's Operations team is dedicated to delivering high-quality broadcasts to listeners across Northern California and Nevada through both traditional and digital platforms. As a Senior Broadcast Engineer, you will play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the terrestrial and digital broadcast and production facilities for CapRadio's group of stations. We are seeking an individual with a passion for radio broadcast, a commitment to continuous learning, and strong attention to detail.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Design, install, service and maintain all equipment at all of CapRadio transmitter sites, including codecs, ISP routers, generators, processors and transmitters in accordance with FCC rules and regulations
  • Install and maintain all Studio Transmitter Link (STL) equipment.
  • Maintains satellite downlinks and associated receivers
  • Monitor site status, listener reports and satellite feeds from member networks or stations to meet or exceed the CapRadio and NPR goal of 99.95% on-air reliability
  • On-call, evening, overnight and weekend work, as well as travel throughout Northern California
  • Respond to service interruptions as needed.
  • Provide effective customer service to clients and users on technical matters
  • Perform monthly site visits to CapRadio managed sites and quarterly site visits to leased sites to perform repairs and preventative maintenance
  • Timely order technical equipment and supplies
  • Keep updated and streamlined documentation on processes, procedures, and workflows
  • Establish procedures and standards for operating and maintaining transmitter equipment
  • Establish procedures for testing of transmitter equipment, performance of preventative maintenance activities and operation of equipment during test of Emergency Broadcast System
  • Provides in-house training and troubleshooting for all industry-specific software and computer applications
  • Organize and inventory all assets, including equipment, parts, and spares for documentation that supports the broadcast environment
Qualifications/Experience:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of FM RF transmission, digital STL microwave and satellite uplink and downlink systems.
  • Knowledge of FCC Rules and regulations for licensed broadcast facilities.
  • At least 5 years of broadcast engineering experience and associate degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Must be a licensed driver, insurable with own transportation and be available/on call when requested.
  • Ability to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle required.
  • Position requires travel to transmitter sites across Northern California. Some overnight travel may be required.
  • Must hold a valid FCC Operators License
  • Society of Broadcast Engineers Certification at senior level or above is desired
  • Must be familiar with the public radio industry, new media delivery, FCC regulations, and not-for-profit business
  • The ability to handle project administration, budget planning and purchasing
  • Computer knowledge, both user and systems administration
  • Team building and strong social skills
This role requires 80% travel to our remote tower sites. Employment and Education verification will be required for the new hire.

Statehouse/Politics Reporter Fill-In Anchor

Summary Capital Public Radio is looking for a journalist who believes in the watchdog role of the press and who can translate complicated policy, regulation and legislation into compelling copy that explains how the legislature's actions affect the daily lives of our audience.

A great candidate for this role will be able to provide thorough, thoughtful reporting, is excellent at connecting with well-paced sources and is able to see the big story lurking in the small details. Above all, we are looking for a statehouse reporter who is endlessly curious and thrives in exploring how the government impacts the lives of everyone in the state.

The content produced by this reporter will be shared between NPR affiliate stations across California. The reporter will file daily radio news spots and online reports, as well as occasional radio features. The reporter has solid news judgment and reporting skills, is capable of covering politics and general assignment stories (as necessary). They must be enterprising and have breaking news and beat reporting experience and know how to develop sources. The reporter will be involved in special coverage plans like elections. The reporter may occasionally file reports or features for NPR. The reporter will have daily discussions with news managers and editors to plan coverage assignments.

The reporter will also serve as fill-in Anchor for Insight, Capitol Public Radio's afternoon talk show focused on in-depth interviews with community leaders, advocates, experts, artists and more. Insight goes beyond the talking points to provide background and understanding on breaking news, big events, politics and culture in the Sacramento region and beyond.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Write and produce daily and feature stories.
  • Will file a minimum of three on-air stories per week and two enterprise stories a month.
  • Good communications skills.
  • Conduct interviews, perform audio editing, voice work, and production of story versions that publish on both radio and web/digital platforms.
  • Pitch story ideas to your assigned editor; receive and incorporate editor feedback.
  • Attend weekly team meetings and daily budget meetings. Coordinate and co-produce special projects as assigned.
  • Cultivate new and existing contacts with sources and newsmakers.
  • Bring a spirit of innovation, collaboration, creative consideration and recognition that hitting a word count or a proscribed number of sources is not the mark of successful reportage
  • Work closely with other reporters, sharing information and story ideas.
  • Produce general assignment reporting as needed.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • When legislature is in session, the reporter has a command for and puts attention toward covering state government.
  • Knowledge of the Associated Press Style.
  • Available to work nights and weekends or odd hours as needed per the news cycle, as well as assigned holidays per the overall newsroom scheduling processes. Be flexible and be willing to pivot according to the demands of the news cycle.
Qualifications/Experience:
  • A sophisticated level of awareness and understanding of the issues facing California state policy makers today. An understanding of tax/revenue policy, health policy, education or environmental policy would be a plus.
  • A passion for audio storytelling is a must.
  • Education: A Bachelor's degree in journalism or communications or the equivalent experience is required.
  • Experience: At least two years of public radio reporting experience and a solid understanding of how state government works.
  • Technical Skills: This position must be computer literate; must have knowledge of writing, broadcasting, editing, voice work and production, and a familiarity with recording equipment.

As the station's Wildfire Reporter, you will play a crucial role in providing comprehensive coverage of wildfires and their impact on the region. NSPR's Wildfire Reporter will be based out of Chico and cover enterprise wildfire recovery stories for a regional and statewide audience with opportunities to publish on a network of public radio stations throughout the state, and on NPR.
